Celebrating the festive season with 6 unique Christmas customs in Asia

No Santa riding reindeer, no snowman or long-nosed snowman or biscuits and candy sticks, Asian countries have a Christmas custom.unique much more than that. 

White snow and candy sticks often come to mind when we think of Christmas. However, Singapore has no snow and the lambs of God in many Asian countries do not celebrate White Christmas the usual way in Europe. From the unique wayang kulit ball puppet show in Indonesia to Haraboji, Korea's version of Santa Claus, these are the unique Christmas customs of Asian countries.

Eating KFC in Christmas Eve in Japan

The Japanese eat KFC chicken instead of the turkey at Christmas. This probably started with the "Kentucky for Christmas!" campaign. (Kentucky for Christmas) of a KFC branch in Japan performed during the festival season of 1974.

Inspired by the chicken at Christmas parties in the West, the KFC chicken was the perfect alternative at the time because it was not easy to buy a turkey in Japan in the 1970s. Many people see this and order KFC fried chicken which keeps it sold out all over Japan at Christmas.

Not Santa Claus, Haraboji is Korea's Santa Claus's

This unique custom of celebrating Christmas in the cradle of K-pop culture will make many visitors extremely excited when traveling to Korea. Koreans have a way of varying the tree and Santa Claus to suit their traditions and culture.

Instead of using round balls, snowflakes or five-pointed stars, Koreans decorate their Christmas trees with silk sandals and drums. In addition, at Christmas dinner, Koreans like the Japanese do not eat turkey but they eat bulgogi, a famous roast beef in the country of kimchi. 

Santa in Korea doesn't wear red, rides reindeer or goes through chimneys, but instead wears green and traditional hats of Korean. Koreans call him Haraboji, which means grandfather.

Almost all businesses and amusement parks in Hong Kong are immersed in the festive Christmas atmosphere and entertain people with a show of hundreds of bright lights. Most notably is Victoria Harbor, where everyone can see the Christmas greetings created by countless electric lights.

Philippines is the only country in Asia with a large Christian population, so their unique Christmas custom is also very enjoyable. 

Filipinos take Christmas very seriously and will prepare for it months in advance. On Christmas Day, after the church's compulsory Mass, they will celebrate the birth of the Lord with traditional dishes such as sticky rice, stuffed chicken and fruit cake.
