Myanmar Travel Essentials & Insights

Expand each guide for detailed information on entry regulations, regional weather, local gastronomy, health, and preparation advice.

Passport and visa

A passport valid for six months beyond arrival is required, along with a visa; an e-visa is available to many nationalities. Entry rules and permitted regions can change, so we confirm current requirements and official advisories before every proposal.

Currency

The kyat (MMK) is the local currency. Bring clean, undamaged US dollar notes to exchange; cards are accepted in only a few international hotels, so we plan cash for the whole journey.

Phones & Internet service

Mobile and internet coverage varies by region and can be restricted at times. We advise on a local SIM and download offline maps and documents before departure.

Weather

Myanmar has a cool dry season (November–February), a hot season (March–May) and a monsoon (June–October). Bagan and Mandalay sit in the dry zone and see far less rain than the coast.

Health and Safety

Drink bottled water and choose busy, reputable venues. Medical facilities are limited outside Yangon, so travel insurance with evacuation cover matters; our desk monitors conditions and is on call.

Vaccinations

Routine vaccines should be current. Hepatitis A and typhoid are often advised for extended travel; consult your physician or a travel clinic before departure.

Travel insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation and trip interruption is strongly recommended for private journeys. Check that your policy covers the regions on your itinerary.

Food and drink

Burmese cuisine offers tea-leaf salad, mohinga and Shan noodles with generous curries and fresh herbs. We note dietary preferences on every itinerary.

Public holidays

Thingyan (the water festival, mid-April) and Thadingyut (the festival of lights, around October) are the major events; offices and transport slow, so we book early.

Pre-departure checklist

Confirm flights and permits, carry clean USD notes, pack modest clothing for pagodas (shoulders and knees covered, shoes off), and check current official travel advice shortly before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Myanmar Travel Monograph: Curated Queries

Answers on bespoke private journeys, visa facilitation, customization, currency, health, and booking policies.

When is the best time of year to visit Myanmar?

November to February is cool and dry and suits most itineraries. March–May is hot, and the June–October monsoon is lush; Bagan stays comparatively dry.

Do I need a visa to enter Myanmar, and can Indochina Charm Tours assist?

Most nationalities need a visa; an e-visa is available to many. Rules and permitted regions change, so we confirm current requirements and advisories for your dates.

Can our itinerary and private guides be fully customized?

Yes. Every journey is FIT-tailored — from Bagan sunrise by e-bike to Inle Lake boat days — and designed around current conditions and permitted regions.

What currency should I bring, and are credit cards widely accepted?

Bring clean, unmarked US dollar notes to exchange into kyat. Cards are rarely accepted outside a few hotels, so we plan cash needs with you.

What health, vaccination, and food safety precautions should we take?

Drink bottled water, eat freshly cooked food and consult your doctor on vaccines before travel. We also share the latest official safety advice for your route.

What is your booking deposit and cancellation policy?

A modest deposit confirms services; balance timing varies by season. Cancellation terms are stated clearly on your proposal — we prioritize transparency.
