Land of a Million Elephants

“Laos is Southeast Asia at its most unhurried: saffron-robed monks at dawn in Luang Prabang, turquoise waterfalls, slow Mekong boats and the mysterious Plain of Jars. Our private journeys keep the pace gentle and the encounters genuine.”

Laos Travel Essentials & Insights

Expand each guide for detailed information on entry regulations, regional weather, local gastronomy, health, and preparation advice.

Passport and visa

Most visitors need a passport valid for six months beyond arrival. A tourist e-visa and visa on arrival are available for many nationalities; we confirm the correct option for your passport and border crossing.

Currency

The kip (LAK) is the local currency. Large denominations can feel confusing at first; hotels and tour operators often accept US dollars, and Thai baht is common near the border. ATMs are reliable in Vientiane and Luang Prabang but scarce elsewhere, so we plan cash ahead.

Phones & Internet service

4G is good in Vientiane and Luang Prabang and patchy in rural areas. Local SIMs and eSIMs are inexpensive and your concierge can arrange one.

Weather

Laos has a cool dry season (November–February), a hot season (March–May) and a rainy season (June–October). Waterfalls are most vivid after the rains; November to February is ideal for most circuits.

Health and Safety

Drink bottled water and eat freshly cooked food. Medical facilities are basic outside the main towns, so we choose lodging with reliable access and our in-country desk is on call 24/7.

Vaccinations

Routine vaccines should be current. Hepatitis A and typhoid are often advised for extended travel; consult your physician or a travel clinic before departure. Ask your clinic about malaria advice for rural routes.

Travel insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation and trip interruption is strongly recommended for private journeys.

Food and drink

Lao cuisine centres on sticky rice, grilled fish, laap and fresh herbs. Luang Prabang's night market and riverside kitchens are highlights; we note dietary preferences on every itinerary.

Public holidays

Pi Mai (Lao New Year, mid-April) and Boun That Luang (November) are the great festivals; some services pause, but the atmosphere is unmatched when booked early.

Pre-departure checklist

Confirm flights and any slow-boat or road legs, carry modest cash in small notes, pack light layers and modest clothing for temples, and respect alms-giving etiquette in Luang Prabang.

Frequently asked questions

Laos Travel Monograph: Curated Queries

Answers on bespoke private journeys, visa facilitation, customization, currency, health, and booking policies.

When is the best time of year to visit Laos?

November to February is cool and dry and suits most itineraries. March–May is hot, and June–October is rainy but green, with vivid waterfalls and fewer visitors.

Do I need a visa to enter Laos, and can Indochina Charm Tours assist?

Most nationalities need a visa, available as an e-visa or on arrival. We advise on the right option for your passport and entry point.

Can our itinerary and private guides be fully customized?

Yes. Every journey is FIT-tailored: hotels, pacing, guides and experiences — from sunrise alms observation to private Mekong cruises — are adjusted to your wishes.

What currency should I bring, and are credit cards widely accepted?

Carry some US dollars to exchange and use the kip for markets. Cards work in upscale hotels and restaurants in Luang Prabang and Vientiane; elsewhere cash is essential.

What health, vaccination, and food safety precautions should we take?

Drink bottled water, eat freshly cooked food, use repellent and consult your doctor on vaccines and malaria advice before travel.

What is your booking deposit and cancellation policy?

A modest deposit confirms services; balance timing varies by season. Cancellation terms are stated clearly on your proposal — we prioritize transparency.
