Son Doong Son Doong was discovered by Mr. Ho Khanh in 1991, on a forest trip to find agarwood. At that time, Mr. Khanh encountered a sudden thunderstorm, was looking for a place to shelter from the rain, accidentally discovered a cave arch. Intending to get into it to shelter from the rain, but when he came to the cave, Khanh caught a strong breeze blowing continuously from inside the cave. Not knowing it was a natural phenomenon, Mr. Khanh immediately thought of the legend of the streamers living in the cave that was blowing wind out, afraid of "creeping hair", Mr. Khanh did not dare to enter the cave anymore but nestled. by the cliff, waiting for the rain to stop and go on.
"It was the first time I came to the door of Son Doong cave, after that because my life was so hard, I forgot about it," - said Mr. Ho Khanh. At the time of discovering Son Doong cave, Mr. Ho Khanh did not know the value of the cave. Not long after that trip, he quit his job searching for agarwood and went back to farming. For the next 15 years, the cave's whereabouts remained in darkness.
In 2007, when an expedition of the Royal Society of England came to search for a new cave in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Mr. Khanh brought his story to tell them. That is when the journey to find the old cave begins. Anh Khanh also took the expedition to find Son Doong cave for 2 days but could not find it.
During that trip, Mr. Howard Limbert himself, when observing the natural phenomenon of the surrounding area, asserted that Khanh must have a large cave recently. However, even with the help of advanced scientific equipment and Google Earth software, the expedition still could not find Son Doong cave. It was not until 2009 that Mr. Ho Khanh officially rediscovered the old cave.
According to geologists, Son Doong cave was formed about 2 - 5 million years ago, when river water flowed across the limestone area was buried along a fault line. The water eroded food and created a giant tunnel like today. The size of the Son Doong cave is very large with a length of at least 5km, equivalent to the capacity of about 68 Boeing 777 aircraft.
